"Spires is a writer whose stories are delivered, for the most part, like good jokes. They have points and punchlines. She adopts what you might call classical techniques - such as the epistolary story, 'Belles Lettres', which concerns two mothers arguing about their children and their interactions at school - but usually refracted through up to the minute, ethnographic interrogations (so, in 'Belles Lettres', the two characters seem to present different kinds of heads in the world, and each doesn't entirely respect the other's choices)…"
