7 Books Based on Fan Fiction

Fan fiction (stories written by fans that feature characters and settings from existing films, television shows, novels, etc.) has always been a deep-seated part of fandom culture. Retellings and rewrites of folklore and fairy tales have also been popular within the last few years, showing that the spectrum of fan fiction is wide, that its boundaries are murky, and that its position can be extremely polarizing.

Some authors love it, some authors don't, and some authors have used their own “fan musings” as starting points for their own novels. Check out some of these books below!

The world of Jane Austen has been revisited, reinterpreted, and readapted in many ways by many authors over the years. Bringing droves of the undead to the grounds of Pemberley is but one of the ways Grahame-Smith added apocalyptic flavor to this classic love story.

Although Rhys’ work is considered a masterpiece in its own right, her unsettling story of Antoinette Cosway was inspired by the origins of Bertha Mason—also known as “the madwoman in the attic” and foil to Charlotte Bronte’s eponymous character, Jane Eyre.

Before turning pro, Clare was a well-known writer of Harry Potter fanfiction. Though her popular young adult series The Mortal Instruments bears little resemblance to the magical universe conceived by J.K. Rowling, its roots can be traced back to the halls of Hogwarts.

Almost everyone is familiar with the steamy escapades of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. But what some might not know is that the Fifty Shades trilogy evolved from James’ Twilight fanfiction, giving this business-meets-pleasure series some bite.

Taking a cue from Homer's Illiad, Miller adds breadth and dimension to one of Greece's greatest warriors and most tragic heroes. Achilles will not be the last mythical figure that Miller will adapt. Her upcoming novel Circe, based on the enchantress from Homer's Odyssey, will be available in April 2018.

While not traditionally thought of as a work of fan fiction, the powerful verses of Milton’s magnum opus brought the Bible to life in a way that still resonates. His sweeping epic weaves together multiple points of view, giving voices to familiar characters both good and evil.

Way before the Broadway musical, Maguire's Wicked was originally based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Maguire’s work retells the story from the point of view of the Wicked Witch of the West, offering a more sympathetic portrait of this iconic villain.
